Seneca Interlibrary Loan (ILL) FAQ
What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service where the Seneca District Center Library requests material from, or supplies material to, another library. The lending library decides whether to fulfill your request. This process helps you access items not available within the local collection.
What Can Be Borrowed?
-
You can request items not owned by your local library within the Seneca District or those declared long overdue or missing.
-
Materials that are newly published (within the last 6 months), current bestsellers, high-demand titles, entire magazine/journal issues, eBooks, video games, and licensed software are not eligible for ILL.
-
Photocopies of articles may be requested, but not full issues or reference materials that do not circulate.
Who Can Place an ILL Request?
-
Any Seneca District patron with a current, good-standing library card can make requests using their own card.
-
There is a strict limit of two requests at a time per library card (including pending or checked out ILLs).
-
Paid & Access PA accounts are not eligible.
-
You must pick up and return borrowed ILL items at the library it is borrowed from only; this information will be communicated clearly & failure to return the items from where they are picked up may result in fines or costs.
Will an ILL Cost Me Anything?
-
Most requests are free for the patron, but rarely, a lending library may charge a fee.
-
If a fee applies, you will be contacted before the request is processed and asked to approve it. If you accept, you must pay up front—even if you do not pick up the item.
-
If you repeatedly request then decline items, your account may be charged $5 per occurrence.
How Long Will It Take To Get My Item?
-
Most items arrive within 2–4 weeks, but some may take longer or not be filled due to availability or lender policy.
-
If you no longer need the item, please notify the ILL department as soon as possible to cancel your request.
Can I Renew My Item?
-
Renewal requests must be made at least 3 days before the due date by contacting the ILL department.
-
Renewals are not guaranteed and depend on the lending library’s policy.

Please check the catalog before making an ILL request. ILL service is unavailable when stated on the library’s website due to staffing or other reasons.
